Goes without saying... equally this is the standard reference (at least back in my 24-hour interval). It'southward different than other reference books (I guess some wouldn't fifty-fifty call it that) in that it has parts or wholes of the original sources with a short abstract prefacing each. Also, the selections are grouped non merely by periods simply by ideas within periods such as "Objecthood and Redctivism" (inside Modernism) or "The Critique of Originality" (within Postmodernism). As a visual art major in grad schoolhouse and instructor, this book is a necessity when writing papers for art history, criticism and critiques considering it offers insights from some of the best artists and critics of the age. A lot of the manufactures require extra research to comprehend, however, after reading and researching nearly of this (very thick) book, I have learned a great deal about theories and ideas I never knew existed in Fine art. This volition stay on my volume shelf for the residuum of forever.

I read this book (most of it) for a Art Theory and Criticism course I took concluding semester for college. Man, information technology is a dense huge book, ( 1258 pages!) A lot of it was very dumbo reading too because many of the theorists' articles in the volume was from the 1920s to the 1940s written in a time when academic language was very ahem, academic and extremely scholarly and also from a time that is not electric current. So a lot of the material was very hard to parse. Possibly I am more pedestrian merely I do like things t I read this book (nigh of information technology) for a Fine art Theory and Criticism class I took last semester for college. Human, it is a dense huge book, ( 1258 pages!) A lot of it was very dumbo reading too considering many of the theorists' articles in the book was from the 1920s to the 1940s written in a time when bookish linguistic communication was very ahem, bookish and extremely scholarly and too from a time that is non current. So a lot of the fabric was very difficult to parse. Peradventure I am more pedestrian but I do like things to exist a little easier to read. It is good that the class required a lot of participation considering we needed information technology to truly sympathize information technology all. But personally, some of information technology was quite pretentious. Nevertheless, I gave information technology 4 stars because it was pretty comprehensive in the amount of information information technology included (again 1258 pages). For example 12 divide articles alone on cubism. (The book didn't get into modernism until halfway through the book) I volition admit to not having read the entire book merely just assigned readings (but it was a lot) and mayhap a few more chapters in trying to empathise part of information technology. This was bought as a reference book for my art Caste grade, which was useful at the time but I establish the language (Art Critic Jargon), very, very hard to encompass and to be quite honest boring; equally soon as I had finished with it I sold information technology.

Reading this entire book felt like an achievement. Near the end it was harder to read because mid-way I decided that art critics are boring. And they are. They just constitutional on and on and on and on. The existent precious stone of this book is the text past artists themselves, their symposiums, and their interviews. Not the type of book I could read cover to cover, yet full of pivotal moments in fine art from 1900-2000. I detect myself dipping in and out whenever a new interest or area of art captures my attention. Information technology was purchased every bit a mandatory text for the theory component of my art degree, but remains a staple on my bookshelf.

Fine art in Theory is not a book you "currently read" or finish, really.
